Bronner

A true character in the vineyard. Independent, resilient, and spicy – a wine with presence, just like the vine itself.

Bronner

A true character in the vineyard. Independent, resilient, and spicy – a wine with presence, just like the vine itself.

ORIGIN:

Bred in 1975 by Norbert Becker at the State Viticultural Institute in Freiburg A cross between Merzling × Gm 6494. Cultivated by us since the early 2000s.

GRAPES & RESISTANCE:

Medium-sized, often shouldered clusters. Young vines tend to produce compact, tight-berried bunches, which become looser with age. When left hanging for longer, the berries are prone to sunburn in sunny conditions.
Very good resistance to downy mildew (Peronospora), good resistance to powdery mildew and botrytis.

WINE CHARACTER:

On the palate, our Bronner shows plenty of spice – hay, alpine herbs, and cool minerality. Not a loud wine, but one that lingers and reveals new layers with time.

OUR EXPERIENCE:

Bronner is a variety with edges – and that’s exactly what makes it exciting. It grows between 400 and 500 meters a.s.l. on two contrasting sites:
→ Clay-rich, calcareous soil with dolomite content at the estate – a cool, elevated site
→ Lean, sandy gneiss-schist soil on a hot, terraced slope

Bronner shows clear traits in the vineyard:
→ Vigorous, upright growth in vertical shoot positioning – self-supporting with strong tendrils
→ Uneven budbreak, but evens out quickly
→ Early flowering, yet ripens late
→ Needs close attention in drought or with high yields – berry shrivel is a known issue
→ Typically 2–3 clusters per bud; wood ripening is stable
