Souvignier Gris

ORIGIN:

Souvignier Gris was bred in 1983 at the State Viticultural Institute in Freiburg. A crossing of Seyval Blanc × Zähringer. It has been a permanent part of our winery for many years – used for still wines, skin-fermented wines, and as a base for cuvées.

GRAPES & RESISTANCE:

Medium to large, loosely packed clusters with pinkish skins. Cylindrical shape. Depending on the site, bunches may be tighter or looser.
Very high resistance to downy mildew (Peronospora), powdery mildew (Oidium), and botrytis – some of our vineyards have never needed any plant protection treatments.

WINE CHARACTER:

Among the PIWI varieties we grow, Souvignier Gris is the most neutral – and that’s precisely its strength. In the glass, it shows a purist character, with fine citrus acidity, delicate tannins, and a mineral-salty structure. Clear, elegant, and unpretentious.

OUR EXPERIENCE:

Souvignier Gris is grown on different rootstocks and consistently shows its signature traits:
→ Moderate to strong vigor, very upright and balanced growth
→ Vigorous tendril formation, airy canopy, reliable wood maturation
→ About 1 bunch per bud – lower fertility, but consistently high quality
→ On nutrient-rich soils or with magnesium deficiency, stem necrosis can occur – we pay close attention to soil nutrient balance
→ Loose clusters on gravelly soils, more compact on loamy sites
→ Late ripening, making it ideal for our mid-altitude vineyard locations
